We easily found (thanks SatNav) the little town of Tregnago just north of Verona where we were to stay in a villa. Wonderful villa in a charming little town just opposite a pizza restaurant, and cafes around the corner with TVs with sports channels. I mention sports TV as during this past couple of weeks the most interesting Tour de France in years was happening just over the border with the prospect of an Australian winning it for the first time and I haven't watched a stage.
The horror, the horror.
Back to travel.
So the next day we drove into Verona by ourselves and didn't even get lost without SatNav. Amazing. We found the Arena pretty easily as it really is rather large (3rd biggest Roman amphitheatre left apparently and nearly 2000 years old). We queued up and enjoyed the spectacle of people in Roman uniform going up to attractive young ladies offering for them to take a photo. It really is a rather remarkable building.
The local theatre is a cracker
Even the back row seats are good
A bit drafty but it'll do
We then couldn't help ourselves and sought out Julia's balcony. Quite an amazing throng had gathered to photography the famous balcony reportedly the very one William Shakespeare based his play upon. Except it probably wasn't. Doesn't matter though, as if you had the money and the inclination you could pay to hang out on Julia's balcony for 5 minutes. We took photos of other people doing that.
Romeo, Romeo......
