Bangkok a go go

Friday June 17
An early start with Maja up at 5 again and poor Delia entertaining her while the boys and I slept in to an indulgent 6.30am. Then we headed off for a bit of kulcha. First we headed off on the metro system to see the solid gold Buddha about 3 metres high. Apparently they only discovered that it was solid gold when they dropped it when they were moving it in the 1950s.

We then wandered off to find a ferry pier for a trip along the rather muddy river (Finley’s travel journal now includes a rather brown looking page which is apparently the river). We were getting a bit lost so we decided it was time to jump into a Tuk Tuk. Somehow all 5 of us squeezed into the little thing as zoomed around the streets of Bangkok. Let’s face it, OH&S is not Thailand’s strong suit.

Finley couldn’t wipe the grin off his face whilst Ben sat back looking very unimpressed doing his occasional teenager impersonation.

We then hopped on the boat (slightly harrowing experience leaping across the gap between pier and boat whilst holding small children) and motored up the river.

 Jumping on board

We then found the reclining gold Buddha. Big Buddha that one. Ben and Finley were quite interested.

For lunch we decided to journey to Khao San Rd by Tuk Tuk.
Finley: “I love Tuk Tuks”
Me too.
We were keen to see how Khao San Rd had changed in the 13 years. We didn't remember much of the place, but it did see to be a lot bigger and busier than last time.
After some chips Ben decided he wanted Delia’s spicy Tom Yum soup so we had to order him one. It may not be quite Bear Grylls cuisine but for a kid who’s not yet 7 and raised on pasta and bread the prospect of a bowl of very spicy soup with squid in it would be quite formidable but the little trooper wolfed it all down and wouldn’t even give me some. Greedy pig.

Then we went back via the river again for me to go to the conference and Delia and the kids to get some respite from the heat and humidity.

A tiring but very satisfying day.

No doubt more soon
