We caught a bus over the Seine up to Napoleon's modest monument and had to walk the 290 steps as the lift was out of action. Again, Ben the Super Trooper just steamed ahead up all the steps without a second thought. And these steps were pretty steep and a spiral staircase with a gap in the middle so that past the flimsy hand rail was a drop of a good 40 metres. To be frank that sort of thing gives me the heebie jeebies so I had to pretend to be brave and go up whilst carrying Finley (not quite up to 290 steps) nearly the whole way. Finley takes my line on such things (“I'm scared pappa”), so I had to press both of us against the wall and shimmy our way up.
I'm scared too!
But what a view. Magnificent. Is it sacrilegious to say the view is better than the Eiffel Tower? No matter, it was great, in fact one of the reasons it is so good is that you can see the Eiffel Tower. Can't really do that from the Eiffel Tower.
